DeAndre Jordan is the last piece of the Los Angeles Clippers big three who’s still on their roster. First Chris Paul asked to be traded to Houston. Then Blake Griffin was traded to the Detroit Pistons for Avery Bradley, Tobias Harris, and a future first and second-round pick.
Now the Los Angeles Clippers have traded Austin Rivers, to Washington Wizards for Marcin Gortat. It appears that DeAndre Jordan days in Los Angeles are numbered
Jordan has until Friday to decide whether or not he’s going to opt-into the final year of his 24 million dollar contract. At first, I initially thought he would stay with the team. Opposed to running the risk of becoming a free agent.
However, after taking a look at what teams have cap space. I noticed that the Dallas Mavericks has over 30 million dollars available. The Mavericks was high on Jordan back in 2015. So high that they offered him a deal. That was worth close to 90 million dollars. After giving Dallas a verbal commitment. The center had a change of heart and decided to stay with Los Angeles.
Mainstream media destroyed him for this. Their explanations for doing so was “he should’ve given Mark Cuban a call, and let him know he changed his mind” But to me, doing that would’ve been equivalent to him calling your fiance and saying “Hey I decided I don’t want to be married”.
Now fast forward to 2018. It’s safe to say that the Mavericks would still have interest in Jordan. Dirk Nowitzki is still serviceable. Dennis Smith Jr appears to be a future star, and Harrison Barnes averaged close to 19 points last season.
With that said adding a player like Deandre makes sense for the Dallas Mavericks. Which is why (I think) the Clippers traded Rivers for Gortat. It’s very possible that the Clippers knows Jordan will be leaving them for Dallas. So they decided to make a move before he does?.
