Rapper/Mogul Jay-Z has another venture under his belt. Puma named him their Creative Director.
After 20 years, the shoe company Puma is getting back into basketball. The company has been trying to get back into basketball shoes, and their first order of business was bringing in Jay-Z.
Initially, reports referred to Jay-Z as the president of Puma Basketball. But, it was later clarified that he is the Creative Director. A spokesperson for Puma gave an update.
“I can confirm that according to his deal with Puma, his official designation is Creative Director,” Adam Petrick, global director of marketing and brand for Puma, told ESPN. “I referred to him (earlier) today by an informal designation.
Puma also signed three projected first-round picks. They signed DeAndre Ayton, who is projected to be the first pick, Marvin Bagley III and Zhaire Smith. Ayton,Bagley and Smith are the first basketball players since Vince Carter to sign a deal with Puma. While it will take a lot to compete with Nike and Adidas, Puma is off to a good start. The addition of these players could help their company tremendously. DeAndre Ayton is charismatic, which works for company trying to reintroduce/re-invent themselves. The addition of Jay-Z also benefits the company. His name could attract other players. “Can’t Knock the Hustle” of Puma or Jay-Z.
The future looks bright for Puma. If they can bring in players and make good shoes, they’ll be fine. I am curious to see what’s next for them.
