Newark New Jersey – With a WABA Championship at stake. The Jersey Expressions played like a team that was ready to make history. Erika Jones led all scorers with 28 points. Iasia Hemingway added 23 and Ayesha Barkley chipped in 17. As the Jersey Expressions won the first ever WABA championship by beating the Orlando Splash 108 – 96.
The Jersey Expressions came out the gate swinging and jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter. They were able to control the pace of the game. While knocking down shots, and controlling the paint. Jersey also didn’t make a lot of mistakes on the offensive end. But for the times they did. It seemed like they were able to make up for it on the defensive end.
As for the Orlando Splash, they looked out of sync offensively. There were points and times during the game when the 8-0 Splash couldn’t buy a basket. On one particular play, Orlando shot, missed and grabbed (at least) four offensive rebound only to come away empty. Which had to be frustrating because the effort was there all night. Yes, the shots weren’t falling, but the Splash played hard. So hard, that they were able to shrink a 30 point deficit down to 8 points in the fourth quarter. But their rally was cut short because it just wasn’t enough time left in the game.
Nina Stone led the Orlando Splash with 18 points. Khadejra Young added 17 and Brittney Waters chipped in 15 for her team.
