Yesterday, the New York Knicks ended their search for a head coach. The Knicks agreed to a four-year deal with Dave Fizdale.
According to ESPN, Fizdale met with the Knicks owner James Dolan on Thursday. The meeting went well, and Dolan proceeded to give his approval to president Steve Mills and general manager Scott Perry. Then, the Knicks entered negotiations with Fizdale.
Dave Fizdale last coached for the Memphis Grizzlies. He was fired from the Grizzlies earlier this season. The Grizzlies were 7-12 under Fizdale, and lost eight consecutive games. This was only a year after Fizdale led the Grizzlies to the playoffs. In the 2016-2017 season, the Grizzlies had a record of 43-39. This year, the Grizzlies had a complete turnaround. But, it was for the worse.
The Grizzlies were Fizdale’s first team as a head coach. He finished his stint with the Grizzlies with a cumulative record 50-51. Fizdale served as an assistant coach for the Miami Heat for four years.
Fizdale traveled back to his L.A,and will be back to New York for a news conference early next week.
The Knicks were in need of a coach after they fired Jeff Hornacek. They fired him one game after New York finished their regular season. New York look at several candidates, but Fizdale impressed them most. Dave Fizdale will be the Knicks 29th head coach in the team’s history.
The Knicks are in need of a fresh start, and this could be what they needed. The Knicks had a record of 29-53 this season. They have not made the NBA playoffs since the 2012-2013 season. They have the “Unicorn”Kristaps Porzingis, but they need more. The Knicks are still in a rebuilding stage. But, with the right coach, they can get on the right track.
