Mike D’Antoni Thinks Carmelo Anthony Will Fit Better in Houston than New York

Veteran forward Carmelo Anthony could possibly be in his best position to win. According to reports, Carmelo Anthony officially signed with the Houston Rockets on Monday. He signed a one-year, $2.4 million deal. The deal comes after weeks of speculation.

Last year, Carmelo Anthony played for the Oklahoma City Thunder. The New York Knicks traded Anthony to the Thunder in exchange  Enes Kanter, Doug McDermott and a 2018 second-round pick.  The Thunder trio of Carmelo Anthony, Paul George, and Russell Westbrook looked promising, but they did not reach their expectations. Carmelo Anthony averaged a career low in points and assists. He averaged 16.2 points and 1.3 assists. He also averaged a career low in minutes and field goal percentage.

The Oklahoma City Thunder were the fourth seed of the Western Conference. They lost their first round series against the Utah Jazz. They loss the series 4-2. The Thunder’s first (and only) season as a trio was slightly underwhelming. Now, Carmelo Anthony will be a part of another trio. Anthony is a part of the Rockets with guards James Harden and Chris Paul.

Mike D’Antoni, who was Carmelo Anthony’s coach with the Knicks for a period of time, coaches the Houston Rockets. D’Antoni resigned after frequent clashes with Anthony. However, in Houston, D’Antoni and Anthony will be reunited.

Mike D’Antoni discussed of Carmelo Anthony with USA Today’s Sam Amick. D’Antoni had this to say: “Well, at different points of people’s careers or lives or circumstances, things are different. … In New York, when they gave away half the team (to Denver in the February 2011 trade that brought Anthony to the Knicks) and everybody expected us to win a championship, it really wasn’t realistic.”

He continued by saying:”It put a lot of pressure on everybody, and it kind of burst the pipes. I think this is totally different. We’ve got a team that is a whole bunch of veterans that really, we’ve got one thing in mind, and that’s to win a championship, and we have the possibility. We never had a blow-up before, so it’s not he wanted to play a certain way and I kind of wanted to coach another way.”

D’Antoni also said that he expects Anthony to fit in with Houston’s style of play. The Rockets have a unique “shoot first” style that will suit Carmelo Anthony.

Carmelo Anthony is in an interesting position. The Houston Rockets had the best record of the entire league last season. Anthony has a chance to win. If they Houston Rockets play well, they will have a great season.
