The NBA Draft is officially underway. The Phoenix Suns were just on the clock, and made their selection. With the first pick, the Suns selected DeAndre Ayton.
DeAndre Ayton is a center out of the University of Arizona. He is 19 years old and stands at 7’1. He is also 260 pounds with a 7’4 wingspan. In his freshman year, which was also his only year, he averaged 2o.1 points per game, 11.6 rebounds per game, and 1.9 blocks. Ayton was a top recruit out of high school. He was ranked third by ESPN and fifth by Rivals.com He attended Hillcrest Prep Academy in Phoenix. So, he not only attended college in Arizona, he also went to high school there. For the Suns, they not only get a skilled big man, but a “hometown” player.
Mock drafts projected Ayton to go first for weeks. When the Phoenix Suns received the first pick at the draft lottery, Ayton almost instantly became the consensus first pick. He is an impressive athlete who has quick feet. A big man with his athleticism is hard to pass up. He has a solid mid-range game with the potential of having a three-point range. He won’t be a three-point threat, but he’ll be able to make the shots when necessary. One thing he needs to improve is his defense. But, he’ll have plenty of time to do so.
Ayton will join Devin Booker and Josh Jackson in Phoenix. This pick could potentially help the Suns improve. The Suns won’t be a playoff bound team overnight, but with these young players, their continued rebuild is on the right track.
