Jahlil Okafor has played in exactly two NBA games this season. With the strong play of Joel Embiid, in Philadelphia. The 76ers obviously felt they no longer needed Okafor. So they benched him. Not only did they bench Okafor. Philadelphia decided to not pick up the qualifying offer for him. Which means Jahlil will be an unrestrictive free agent at the end of this season.
Now first thing first. For the Sixers to not pick up the qualifying offer for Jahlil. Tells us that Philadelphia has completely given up on a player who they drafted. Number 3 in the 2015 NBA draft. Which means Okafor problems in Philly were bigger than just basketball. You don’t just draft a player number 3 and watch him average 17.5 points his rookies season. Then allow him to go without even making an attempt to keep him.
So the Sixers decided to trade Okafor, Nik Stauskas and a second-round draft pick to the Brooklyn Nets for Trevor Booker.
Now that Okafor is in Brooklyn. The question I ask is will he get the chance to be himself and play his game? Brooklyn is a team who likes to get up and down the court. and shoot a lot of three-pointers. While Okafor is more of a half court, back to the basket player. This style of play has hurt Brooklyn’s former starting center Timofey Mozgov playing time completely. And I would really hate to see a player as talent as Jahlil Okafor. Sitting on the bench for a team that’s as bad as the Brooklyn Nets are. Because at the end of the day Okafor can provide Brooklyn with something they don’t have, and that’s a low post player who can get them a basket when they need one.
